Racial, Ethnic and Cultural Interest

African Students Association (ASA)

Through education, the African Students Association of the University of Michigan hopes to serve as a source of enlightenment on Africa's contributions to society by bridging the gap between students of African descent and the larger student body.

Arab Student Association (ASA)

The Arab Student Association is an organization aiming to unite and serve the Arab community on campus while educating the general student body of the University of Michigan about Arab culture. The association is committed to benefiting both Arab and non–Arab communities while promoting Arabic culture and heritage, thus adding to the diversity of the campus, as well as increasing public awareness about Arabs.

Black Student Union (BSU)

The purpose of the BSU is to promote and sustain an atmosphere that is conducive to the political, cultural, social, spiritual, economic, and educational growth of students of African descent and the University community at large.

The mission of HEADS is to be passionate in the pursuit of intellectual growth, leadership, development, and unity among all men of African Descent.

South Asian Awareness Network (SAAN)

The goal of this annual conference is to motivate individuals to reflect on the impact they can have on the world and to inspire action. SAAN believes this will strongly contribute to forming a cohesive South Asian community in the context of an international network.

The Latino Student Organization (LSO) is dedicated to addressing the various needs of Pan-Latino students at U of M. Their social, educational, cultural, and political functions strive to represent the collective voice of their community.

Native American Students Association (NASA)

NASA is a political, social, and cultural organization that promotes awareness of Native American Issues and provides a community environment for students. The annual Dance for Mother Earth Pow Wow is sponsored and planned by NASA.

Pan–African Network (PAN)

The Pan–African Network is an intercommunity service organization designed to initiate communication between Black/African–American identified student–run groups at the University of Michigan. The Network is a support body designed to enhance the efficiency of these organizations and promote collaborative programming and events that target students of color, and those that target the larger University community.

Sister2Sister’s mission is to provide service to the community and allow a domain where African American women can influence and make a positive impact on their community and each other.

United Asian American Organization (UAAO)

The UAAO is established to work in unity to provide education, promote awareness of Asian Pacific American cultures, and to establish a communication core for the APA organizations and individuals at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

This sorority strives to build and strengthen Latinas' position in society through community service, commitment, and professionalism. They work to develop and empower Latinas, women of color, and women in general. Their national philanthropies include Diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Mental Health and Breast Cancer.

This sorority is a sisterhood of women who have chosen this affiliation as a manner to achieve personal development and to the community through the efforts of a network of close to 3,000 sorority members. Furthermore, we continue to be a pioneer in the Greek fraternal world through development of innovative programming initiatives, such as the Young Women's Leadership Program and Emotional Intelligence.

Arts and Performance

Boxes and Walls

Boxes & Walls is an actual, physical museum created and maintained by students yearly. It promotes an experiential understanding of prejudice and discrimination. Each year, Boxes & Walls creates an interactive museum put together by members to help tour–takers experience prejudice and discrimination first–hand by asking them to assume the social identity of oppressed minorities. The museum is interactive because it invites participation from tour–takers.

Fighting Obstacles Knowing Ultimate Success (FOKUS)

The purpose is to unite students of all backgrounds by exposing and engaging them in various forms of arts including music, dance, poetry, and film. FOKUS will give students a means to satisfy this desire as they look at various forms of the arts.

The goal of So You Say is to give African–Americans, and other people of color, a place to perform in theatre without stereotype. All people with performance related interest are welcome to see what we are about.

Black Volunteer Network (BVN)

BVN is dedicated to educating students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan about social issues affecting our larger communities, and providing opportunities for positive action through service and campus programming.

Intellectual Minds Making A Difference (IMMAD)

IMMAD’s purpose is to assist in the eradication of the academic achievement gap continuing to disempower students in the state of Michigan; the group specifically focuses on college preparation amongst Detroit Public School students, mainly for the ACT examination.

National Society of Black Engineers

The objectives of the organization are to:

  • Stimulate and develop student interest in the various engineering disciplines
  • Strive to increase the number of minority students studying engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering or related fields and to obtain professional engineering registrations
  • Encourage and advise minority youth in their pursuit of an engineering career
  • Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for Blacks and other minorities in that profession

Black Pre–Medical Association

Provide a collective voice for underrepresented medical students, to our fellow students and administration at the University of Michigan Medical School. Foster a sense of community within the medical school among underrepresented students. Actively promote minority recruitment, enrolment, and retention at the University of Michigan Medical School. Work toward the elimination of health disparities in medically underserved communities through outreach and education programs.

Students of Color of Rackham (SCOR)

The SCOR Graduate Organization is a network for Rackham graduate and professional students at the University of Michigan. SCOR is dedicated to the social, cultural, and academic well being of students of color of African, Asian, Latino, and Native American descent. Further, SCOR also includes students of other cultures, ethnicities, and international origins. It promotes, supports, and sponsors efforts concerning the improvement of quality in students' academic, professional, and social lives respectful of cultural differences, disabilities, gender, and sexual orientation.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

Students Allied for Freedom and Equality (SAFE) is a diverse group of student activists organized to promote justice, human rights, liberation, and self-determination for the Palestinian people.

Multicultural Pre–Health Association (MCPHA)

MCPHA’s goals are to enrich and support students in health–related fields and issues. By facilitating and encouraging connections between graduate and undergraduates, MCPHA provides a means of networking, support, friendship, and opportunity for all students.

Peers Utilizing Leadership Skills for Education (PULSE)

Peers Utilizing Leadership Skills for Education (PULSE) is a student–run organization promoting health in residential communities through peer interactions and informative programming. PULSE members can be found in residence halls, Greek communities, and through Campus Outreach events.
